A fantastic SACD and another great reissue from Analoge Productions, this albulm swings like only Monk can. While an unusual lineup for Monk (his only recording as a rythym, trumpet, tenor quintet) the albulm is nonetheless classic Thelonious: choppy, disonant, and yet somehow just right. This is a country blues album--something you would expect from some rural eastern area.. This is not New Orleans or Memphis blues. It is a poor, white man's blues. This performance emphasizes purcussion, but there are no drum solos (thank goodness). Both the performance and sonics are outstanding. The only negative is that this SACD is only 29 minutes in length and as a result I lowered my rating of the performance. It's difficult for me to accept that its ... more |

I ordered this from Europe well over a year ago because I was desparate for SACD popular or rock music. It took about 3 weeks to arrive and cost almost $30. Some earlier reviews on Audio Asylum discouraged me from buying this disc due to its sonics. Well, I saw it for a good price--and bought it. I forgot about why I hadn't purchased it before.
