These are beautifully played, fairly straightforward interpretations which show off du Pre at her best. The original HMV LP is a bit more transparent and has a marginally clearer orchestral picture, but the SACD captures the hall sound well and is definitely preferable to the mediocre RBCD release. ... more |

This was never a favorite of mine on the original HMV LP because of the balancing mismatch--a huge cello which dominates even the sound of the orchestra in full cry--the Chicago Symphony, no less. I agree with the prior review. This is the poorest of the reissue EMI SACDs I have heard, which I generally have been very positive on. The cello concerto holds up quite well against the original HMV LP, although perhaps not quite as transparent, but the LP is much cleaner on the choral works. I ... more |

This is one of the finest recordings from Sanderling's complete Brahms cycle from the'70s. Sanderling's Brahms is majestic and resonant, and this symphony in particular profits from his approach.
