I suppose that it was only a matter of time until the Zinman/Tonhalle recording machine tackled the Mahler symphonies. I personally am not a fan of their Beethoven recordings. I feel that many other people have done the semi-HIP approach more successfully, most notably Mackerras on EMI Budget. ... more

Ives' 2nd Symphony is one of those superb symphonies that few people are familiar with, and could be a regular staple of the repertoire if more people heard it. The catalog certainly does not need another Mahler recording. But an orchestra with a recording contract can not allow there to be a Mahler recording gap between it and its peers. Schubert's piano trios are among his best works, with the slow movement of the E flat being one the 10 most sublime pieces of music ever written. Unfortunately these performances are rather average. Does the catalogue need another recording of the Tchaikovsky 5? Certainly not. There are a plethora of legendary, classic, and just all around good recordings of the symphony available.
