I never really warmed to this disc. Been waiting to write a review until I listened to it multiple times during a period of a few months, but it still leaves me somewhat underwhelmed.

Who is Kei Agaki? Let me borrow a few lines from the Allmusic Guide: "Born in Japan, Akagi lived in Cleveland during a large part of his childhood (from age five-twelve) before returning to Japan. [..] Kei Akagi's associations have included Joe Farrell, James Newton, Allan Holdsworth, Jean-Luc Ponty, two years with Al DiMeola, Miles Davis [JW: 1989-1991; he is featured in the Warner concert video, Miles In Paris] and Stanley Turrentine".

This is modern sounding jazz, mostly melodic, a little angular at times, noodling seemingly without purpose on track 3 and interesting on a couple of the other 9 tracks, five of which are penned by Kei Akagi himself.

The piano recording is very natural sounding, one of the better piano recordings available for sure. My only criticism would be that I would have liked to hear more body and warmth in the tone. This is not to say it's lean or thin, it's just that I find it somewhat cool with a hint of metallic shimmer in the overal sonic signature. It could very well be that I am describing the sound of the instrument Mr. Akagi is playing. In that case this becomes a a statement of preference and not a criticism.

All in all, this album does not hold my attention.
