What an absolute delight is this new recording from Pentatone. A fine romp indeed through extremely well known and well aired popular works. Here they are played with delicious poignancy, full of spirit, character and articulation. Martin Helmchen leads with convicton and authority ably supported by Christian Tezlaff and Aldo Baerten in particular but not to take anything away from the other players in this fine group. It is invidious to compare recordings of the "Trout", there have been so very many fine performances on disc over the years that it can seem almost routine to discover yet another fine performance.

It seems to me 'though that this recording is rather more special than most bringing a new sparkle and freshness to these stalwarts of the repertory. Arguably there have been none finer than this and for me it automatically becomes a top recommendation. What sets the disc apart in my view is an achingly beautiful rendition of the Adagio from Piano Trio in E Flat, D 897 'Notturno'. I just cannot stop playing it especially late at night when one's ship is becalmed after the trouble voyages of the day past; a time for infinite reflection.

Beautifully recorded in a highly realistic acoustic and perspective, beautifully presented as always by Pentatone - the cover picture alone is worth the money - this disc deserves to be in everyone's collection. A fine tribute to the production team as well as the performers.

Go.. BUY!

This disc has it all. Beautiful music, beautifully played, in a warm space and well recorded. When I read that this disc was being used at audio shows for equipment demonstrations, I gave it a re-listen. There is a joy in this performance that I have not often heard in recorded music. The tempo and pace are perfect. The recording is very warm and enveloping ( I listened in two channel). I did notice that the instruments seemed larger than life but this actually added to my enjoyment of the piece. I am not prone to excessive praise (as you will notice if you read any of my other reviews) but this piece just stunned me. Top of the pile. Thank you Pentatone.
