Reviews: Billy Joel: Opus 1-10 Fantasies & Delusions

Reviews: 1

Review by TROLL-Buster May 4, 2010 (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
Performance:   Sonics:
Bill Joel started out studying classical piano and its clear these compositions (numbered opus 1 to 10?)are reminiscences from his youth. They were written many years later after his success as a pop artist,
Unkindly elsewhere reviewed as psuedo Chopin,Lizst,Debussy and numerous others. Some claim to be able to identify Joels pop themes interwoven within the various styles, well if that is so, Im afraid they were too well concealed for me.
Ive also taken over a year to sit comforably with the flowing ,tunefull easy going music and the minor embelishments, trills etc.
Whilst Its clear he has not quite reached the highpoints of his songwritng in this music,he has certainly produced enough varied and pleasant music to almost fill this disc.My only doubt is the final track Opus 10 Air Dublinesque based on a well known beautiful Irish tune. This does not need or benefit from a re arrangement and sadly ends the disc on a slightly flat level.
The remaining tracks all clearly describe their content,The three walzes are particularly nice.
The playing by Richard Yoo is certainly very good if not quite of the international ranked pianists level.Somehow it sounds he is playing just a baby grand, either that or the deeper more powefull passages(not many)lack authority.Otherwise the 2001? recording is very good.
Certainly entertainment, especially if you try to identify the varying composer styles.
note ,this disc seems to be available as both a normal CD and a single layer stereo only but not as a hybrid.Only from the rear cover can you identify the sacd logo which you should confirm prior to ordering.
