Performance:   Sonics:
This is a great SACD: superb playing, fine recording quality, and a wonderful selection of music.

About the music: it is all 20th-century American compositions, from four composers with close ties to the BSO. Windsurfer comments that "one has to develop an ear for this sort of thing", but don't be misled into thinking the music is all inaccessible modernism. The Bolcom piece is somewhat astringent at times, but the others should be a lot of fun for most listeners. The four composers are not well represented on SACD. There are only two other SACDs with music from Foss, one from Gandolfi, one from Bolcom, and none with Golijov. All four composers should be considered among the foremost American composers of the second half of the 20th century, so this disk is really essential. The American Spectrum disk from BIS provides complementary material.
