Performance:   Sonics:
With this exemplary release, the label Praga Digitals pays tribute to the pianist Friedrich Gulda, who died in 2000. He was an adulated virtuoso who did not hesitate to play Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas in concert. “In his refusal of all teaching, of any a priori related to tradition, meaning subjectivism, his playing sought to find sobriety and pure objectivity. His most striking compositions are above all the cadenzas (when he didn’t improvise on the spot) he wrote for Mozart’s concertos” (Dictionary of Interpreters – Robert Laffont). The program on this stereo SACD, remastered based on the original tapes dating from the years 1956, 1957, and 1969, is made up of three composers: Carl Maria von Weber and his Konzertstück Op.79 for piano and orchestra that Volkmar Andreae conducts, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra N°9 K.271, and Richard Strauss with Burleske for piano and orchestra dating from 1890, on which Karl Böhm leads the Wiener Philharmoniker. A boon for all music lovers in quest of essential interpretations.
