This is high on my wish list. I already bought the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th after being so pleasantly surprised (amazed, actually) by the 4th which I obtained at a ridiculously low price on a sale some one posted about here.

This orchestra is known to us from the excellent Tchaikovsky symphonies on Oehms but I think their Stenz Mahler series trumps that one. I cannot offhand think of any Mahler recordings I prefer to the ones I have heard in this series. [part of #3, all of #4 and part of #5.] Looking forward to spending many hours with these excellent recordings.

I know we have too much Mahler and too little of other things but in my opinion this is a series not to be missed

I only have his 4th and 5th and now the 7th and I can only say that, among the 8 of the M7 that I have on SACD, Stenz's recording belongs to the very top, interpretively and certainly soundwise (in stereo, in my case). I fully concur with the onsite review. I'm looking forward to #6.

A hearty endorsement of Castor's review. Stenz unfolds a gripping reading, plumbing the depths of this symphony, which is all about loneliness. The clarity of Mahler's conception is thrillingly and movingly presented, in a wonderfully transparent and three-dimensional soundstage. This may prove to be a highlight of the Stenz cycle, along with Symphony 8.

I'd rate his Fifth higher than the Eighth

Yes, a nice review from Castor as always. Thanks Graham!!

I only have the 5th, but I am very satisfied with the performance. And the Mch soundstage is excellent, too!! I am looking forward to exploring more of this series.

Wow, so many superlatives - any negatives? I have sooo much Mahler already - I'm looking to be dissuaded, please ...

There aren't many bad Mahlers on SACD either which adds doubly to the dilemma. It's rather like the girl or boy of your dreams turning up the day after your wedding day.

'Lines must be drawn' as all politicians will insist although lines drawn in sand hold very little permanency.

Tough, ain't it? :-)

I had about given up on getting more serial Mahler after MTT, Abbado and Boulez (and a sampling of others) but Stenz has forced my hand. Began with Das Knaben Wunderhorn and the 5th and then I was hooked.

But we can be profligate here.
