Discussion: Old, New and Blue: Holland Baroque Society meets Eric Vloeimans

This is a suprising release. Vloeimans' trumpet playing is certainly Miles Davis influenced, and one cut does remind one of Sketches of Spain. I wasn't sure I'd care for much of it, but took a chance--and I'm glad I did. Sampling 30 second chunks doesn't do it justice. This music is hard to catagorize, but the performances seem heart-felt and carried me to some interestin places. As expected, the recording is wonderful. Don't think about, just listen....

Has something similar been done before?

Several times. Here's two:

Thank you Iain, but these are not combinations of Jazz and Baroque, however most interesting.
I meant are there other pieces of Jazz musicians who combine their music with Baroque ensembles?

We attended the live concert in Rotterdam lately, and found it was breathtakingly beautiful, with a intelligent mix of classical and jazzy impressions. The disc was recorded very well, very close to the actual live performance.
I must admit though that it helps a lot if one knows one of the artists, Esther van der Eijk ( By the way, a uttermost charming woman ). A few months ago she spent a night at our home, because she played a fill in with Euterpe Baroque Consort the next day.

Holland Baroque Society meets Eric Vloeimans in OLD, NEW & BLUE 'Sans Parure ...

Haha, and Eric Vloeimans is a lot more sympathetic as it might show on this excerpt ;-)

And more: this appeared on their website:
We are proud to announce that Holland Baroque Society has been invited to play the first King’s Day Concert on 8 April! The concert, in the presence of our King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maximá, will feature Dutch jazz trumpet star Eric Vloeimans and harpist Gwyneth Wentink. We will play highlights of our CD Old, New & Blue. The concert will be broadcast on national television on 26 April at 10.30 PM on Nederland 2.

Sounds wonderful!! I am envious of you. ;-) I would love to attend the live concert of this, but I am glad to hear the SACD's sound is the next best thing.

This SACD has been tantalizing me for quite a while. It might be time to do something about that.
