A deal between the orchestra board and the musicians has been reached. Whether Vanska will return is unknown.

He hasn't been snapped up by anybody else so presumably is still available. Whether his stock is still high there is another question, management usually take a pretty dim view of these walk-outs. Sitting on fences is not fashionable these days and if Vanska was guilty of anything in this whole messy affair it was his failure to come out and unequivocally back the board. You can't be everyone's friend all the time.

According to the NY Times, the cuts in musician pay proposed by the symphony board have been reduced under the new contract. I suppose you could roughly characterize that as a gain, but the sad fact is that all parties lost by allowing the labor dispute to continue for such a long time doing perhaps irreparable damage to the orchestra for many years to come.

Just to set the record straight one more time: it was not a strike. Management locked out the players.

As for Vänskä, he himself says that he is "going to try to get back!!! But they'll have to ask me first." (My translation of the Finnish translation of his originally English remarks on his personal FB page.)

He was to return to conduct the orchestra in some of its self-organized events this spring. Now there's supposedly some talk of maybe incorporating those concerts into the orchestra's regular-season program (yet to be drawn up now).

True, but there was a dispute over the then existing pay levels, which the Board apparently refused to continue. On a very sad note, It is reasonable to assume that quite a number of the better musicians found work elsewhere during the lockout and will not be returning.

Wow, did you actually follow this closely? I don't think there was any way that he could have unequivocally backed the board, given their underhanded actions. He has also said in the last month that he won't be back unless Michael Henson is gone. I don't have time to spell out everything that went on in the last year, but I would suggest having a closer look at the actual actions that the board and management took in the last few years.

He will be conducting in a celebration of the Grammy win, in a concert of the Sibelius symphonies on that disc. Hopefully they can manage to play together on a recording of the remainder of the Sibelius symphonies.
