Didn't expect this one to come. Hmm. Should be interesting.

I had a copy of the 7th Sym. on vinyl years ago.
I am pretty sure it was a Columbia release, but since I didn't keep it, it must not have made much of an impression on me.
But, based on the quality of this series, it may be worth listening to again.
Just checked my files, and it was a Columbia release.

The Ormandy recording was just re-released as part of a Sony 13-RBCD budget box entitled Ormandy Conducts Tchaikovsky. I haven't made it to the relevant disc from the box yet, though.

I have this also, and the Graffman Ormandy concerto #3 LP.
I recall playing these and thinking perhaps I will eventually
grow fond of them, but that never happened.
Something about the angularity of the first theme just doesn't
sit right in my mind.
It is memorable, but I just don't like it.

Same LP, didn’t stick. And another version of both works (Chandos RBCD 9130, with Geoffrey Tozer / Neeme Järvi and the London Philharmonic) which didn’t really stick either.
I nonetheless ordered for (A) completeness sake and (B) hoping that hi-resolution MC will add something extra.
MP3 excerpts sound OK as far as interpretation is concerned and I expect the sound to be as good the rest of the series

I fervently hope that the Hamlet Fantasy Overture and Francesca are recorded in this series.
And no, I don't mean the incidental music to Hamlet.
The Jurowski SACD is good enough for that.

I enjoy the piece though calling it 'number 7' does it a disservice, given that that material that it was drawn from predates number 6. Most academic refs (and Jarvi's recording) just go with "Symphony in Eb" which I think would be a much better light on it, as it were.

Quite right! Manfred doesn't have a number either so maybe No 6 should be No 8?
I hope FD will write some kind of review.

The review by Adrian Cue has a couple of mistakes. The symphony was recorded in 1962, not 1983, by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, not Szell.

Thanks Thomas, you really do know your stuff. You are referring to the world premiere recording of 1962 and you are quite right. That doesn’t mean to say that there wasn’t another recording of it in 1983 with George Szell. Anyhow, as I said, I lost the recording (LP) so I wasn’t able to check. But I should have known better as I referred to it myself earlier in the discussion (#5).
By the way, you said I made a couple of mistakes. You mentioned one. Which are the other ones which I might be able to correct?
