I take certain satisfaction that I may have had a small part in getting Pentatone to record this with Pletnev. I do feel the DG recording of Manfred with Pletnev was their best effort with Tchaikovsky since the Virgin 6th.

I do not feel the Pentatone Tchaikovsky series has been kind to Pletnev (or perhaps the other way around), but do hope this recording is a smash.

I agree, the DG was superb and the Pentatone PT series has been a bit of a disappointment so far.

And thank goodness Pentatone have got rid of their awful coverart.

If you receive regular copies of the Pentatone Newsletter than you will have received this today, a full copy of this latest recording by Mikail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra. Even in MP3 form it is a show stopper. Musically brilliant it is hard to accept that the maestro had no plans to record this work as part of his symphonic cycle simply because he doesn't enjoy playing the work! Simply stunning performance.

Hear it for yourself and just marvel at the treat we have in store when our SACDs arrive.

Well, I'll be getting it that's for sure. I haven't bought all of Pletnev's releases, but I do love Manfred.

For those interested he seems to stick to the score.

(Toscanini added xtra tam-tam crashes to the end of the first movement,
and Kitajenko does as well in his recording.)
Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony - Kitajenko

What I don't like is Pletnev's mannered and abrupt pull back of the tempo at bars 11 and 29
in the 4th movement. It disrupts the forward momentum.

So, why isn't your picture on the cover or is that you pitching a tent on that distant sunlit mountaintop?

So do I, and so will I.
I have Jansons' old Chandos Oslo RBCD burned into my brain I've heard it so often, still sounds pretty good as well!
