Dear Fugue, don't waste your money: after a start in the mountains the performance goes all downhill from there and the sound is glassy bordering on shrill.

After I read this critique, I put on the RBCD. Thielman's performance is the most extrovert Alpine out there. He must have been continually looking at the brass. The performance, as one might expect from the VPO, is powerful if lacking a bit for subtlety, but then who looks for a great deal of subtlety in this piece? Noted very little in the way of shrillness. Have not heard the SACD.

I don't want to break rules by posting a link, but search by UPC: 028947163626. It's eBay item number 380836727606

Thanks, but it already sold. However, that UPC helped track down another copy for $7.09--not a huge risk if I hate it!

if anyone is passionate about this release, PM me and i can look to sell my copy.

The one I ordered arrived today, not only is not SACD, it's Herbert von Karajan's, which I already have! EVERY person who offers it for such a low price sends the HvK version instead--there must be some massive mixup in the database with the ISBIN or UPC number.

The new Saito Kainen/Harding Decca version sounds well from the clips I have heard.

Quite a fiery interpretation. RBCD widely available now, the SACD Japan only...

I have experienced this as well, so I ordered another. So far have not had to pay due to the error. If this keeps up, I'll have the market for the von Karajan Alpine RBCD cornered soon.

I could probably be convinced to part with my (gently used) copy for list price, if one of the frustrated Karajan receivers in the US is interested.

Surely the best advice to the OP remains "Don't be a Mug!"

If you have the CD don't kid yourself that the SACD will be any better, it won't. A brick wall filter is a brick wall filter. This was just a piece of poor and cheap politics from DG at a time when they were still hedging their bets on the future of SACD.

Don't they uprez for the SACD to avoid the brick wall filter?

It's a 48 kHz / 24 bit recording. I think its interest in the SACD community is to the multi-channel community, as it is a multi-channel recording.
