A tiny detail: Sinfonia austera, not austeria. So looking forward to hearing the Vienna phil in this music.

Received it today... looking forward to hear it ! Geohominid's review might be the only one, but it convinced me for sure.

You will be very happy. I have the native 24/44, it is absolutely magnificent music, fabulously well played and recorded.

Not that it probably matters that much really, but my stereo only download is 24/48, not 44.1. But with different sites selling the same recording often at different sampling rates it is sometimes difficult to know what the native recording rate is or was.
Another recording from the same label that I am keen on getting and that has been recorded in DXD format, but is so far on sale as download from Qobuz at 24/88.2 ? Why? have they ripped the SACD? And another "unmentionable" site which often sells downloads, without any indication more than 24 bits,is the second release in their Nielsen symphonies series from NY. I am waiting for its release from a third site that normally has the native rate or 24/192,for sale once they get it,if at all.
From this interesting DACAPO release I Have so far only heard the 1st symphony Austera. And yes,I too am happy to listen to it in very good but imho not really outstanding SQ. Unlike Geohominid who rated both stereo and mch with 5 stars for SQ, in his otherwise excellent review here,I feel that although SQ is very good with a typical live recording balance, rather closely miked with a good realistic take of the direct sound up on stage with plenty of detail captured. But not much ambience apart from some nice percussion bounces off the back wall. And at least on my systems both via headphones and large full range speakers in stereo, it is also a wee bit colourless and lacking in the ultimate timbral and tonal nuances compared to what higher sampling rates and DSD deliver in most cases under similar conditions. I know I am being hypercritical here. Don't get me wrong it is a good even, very good recording. But IMO not quite 5 star. Climaxes are a wee bit hard at times. And no it is not my amp clipping. And massed strings are not quite as realistic as via higher pcm or DXD/DSD to my ears.
Geohominid also claims, something else that I doubt. To me it doesn't sound like this live concert was recorded in the famous Musikverein? I could be wrong and correct me if I am.
I have only one other live recording from there on SACD,Harnoncourt's Bruckner 5 also with the Wiener Philharmoniker. Recorded in 2004 it is much more reverberant and sounds clearly more like I am used to hearing this orchestra in their own hall both live and recorded. This sounds drier than anything I have hitherto heard from the Goldener Saal to me. I wish Dacapo had brought one of their DXD capable DAD AX24 units instead of as now, relying on Austrian Radio's equipment. After all this nitpicking I have to confess that I like what I have heard so far from this release,a lot. Chris

Hi Chris,
I wanted to say "wonderful sound, beautiful music", before switching to "beautiful sound, wonderful music" which is my final text in my previous post ;-)
It sounds extremely good but still lacks the utlimate spark, I agree.
Yet... what a disc !

I agree, I am saving the 8th for this evening's listening. But the 1st is so good that I have also already played it three times in less than 24 hours. As Geohominid says in his review, quite a bit of late Sibelius influences to be heard. And "a whiff" of both Walton 1 and Schostakovich too,to my ears. Great music indeed.

Both symphonies were recorded at Wiener Konzerthaus.

Well if so,no wonder that I couldn't hear the very typical acoustic of the Musikverein at all, from this recording. Konzerthaus Wien is a rather different hall which I am not really familiar with. I have been there a only a few times and long ago. One memorable rehearsal and concert I remember from there was Josef Krips doing Missa Solemnis with the Wiener Symphoniker. It reminds me more of say the Smetana Hall in Prague both visually and acoustically. I suppose both I and Geohominid in his review where expecting it to be the Musikverein since that is both where they normally play and indeed, where they have been photographed in the booklet.
More importantly I have now also heard the 8th symphony and I would now in comparison to it,rate Nörgård's interesting 1st symphony as one of quite a few other very good first symphonies. And his 8th as a captivating even intoxicating contemporary masterwork. Absolutely fascinating to hear a world class orchestra like the Vienna Philharmonic in such a both densely and richly scored contemporary work.
