My SACD/RBCD collection is housed in several IKEA "Billy" bookcases, each one is 79ins(h),31ins(w),10ins(D)and holds about 880 jewel boxes. A certain amount of improvisation is required to obtain 12 shelves.

Are these space saving CD sleeves still available, I understand the Firm has closed down

The Jazz Loft, which used to supply them, has closed down, but they are still available, as far as I know, from the address above.

And the mere thought of replacing my 10K RBCD collection with space saving sleeves and storing the discarded RBCD cases is daunting, to say the least.

It's amazing how quickly it gets done if you steadily transfer, say, twenty at a time while enjoying your collection! Though I must admit, 10,000 does sound very daunting - I only have a few thousand. I just recycle the discarded cases.

It must be said that the soft sleeves are not as sturdy as jewel cases; but if you interleave them every so often with a few jewel cases, or better still, box sets, they are quite manageable.

Indeed, as do I.

I prefer the birch finish over the rest. Very cost effective for what it is.

Of course, I am no longer married to physical discs. I have transferred the first 2K to the NAS so far and ordered industrial shelving for the basement to store the discs. Sort of like the final scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where the valuables are buried again.

And I would think a word of caution is in order for those who are discarding their older RBCDs in deference to newer "remastered" versions. Ironically (or NOT), some of those original RBCDs possess higher DR scores than their "replacements."

Compression artifacts/ the "Loudness" wars were NOT common in the early RBCD days so a careful comparison with their replacements should be in order or risk discarding the superior version.

Newer doesn't necessarily mean better!

Truth spoken there!

About CD shelves: I have made my own from 12x150 mm planed timber, with 12x12 mm strip of wood glued near the back edge so that standard CD/SACD boxes hang about 5mm out from the front when pushed against the strip. Vertical shelf distance about 130mm to accommodate boxed sets also. As 12mm thickness is bit flimsy I have the vertical parts arranged in artsy semi-random style at 30-50cm apart.

Cheap? Yes. Good looking? Not bad at all.

It seems the Billy bookcase I have has been discontinued, as I purchased it in 2010. It's a 25 percent scaled down version of this with two extra shelves:

... in birch of course.

Holds all BD, SA-CD, DVD and CD quite well.

I use CD shelves from this german manufacturer. Two shelves holding 1500 CDs each.
