Hi All,

Anyone know what format the Michael Jackson "Thriller" was originally recorded in?
It was 1983 or thereabouts but it could have been digital. 3M or Sony or even Mitsubishi......someone out there knows!

Thriller is an analogue recording. The SPAR code is AAD.

Hi everyone,

No, this is not the announcement of the multi-channel SACD release of Thriller that we've all been waiting for. Rather it's the announcement of two 2-disc 25th Anniversary Editions of Thriller being released on February 12, 2008 in the U.S.

Amazon.com has both editions up for pre-order if you wish: http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Jackson-25th-Anniversary-Thriller/dp/B001041JKU/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_b

Cheers,

Dan

Waiting for the Multichannel Mixes of Thriller and the Michael Jackson catalog is something that could continue for years!

Sony apparently spent over a Million Dollars in 2001 on Surround Sound SACD mixes of the Jackson catalog - only to fail to get artist signoff to release them.

See the Fox News story on the web at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,30233,00.html for the details.

I doubt that much has changed since that time re: the Michael Jackson albums in Surround Sound.

Thanks for the link. Highly interesting! I never knew this existed. You'd think the guy should be in such financial despair by now that he can't afford to hold back on any such project.

A guy who still owns I think half the rights of Sony Music, including the Beatles, Elvis, Little Richard and so on. Don't worry about his finances, the rumours of him being broke are just hilarious.

Well, because that article is so dated, it should be confirmed that Invincible was released in Oct. 2001 and I, for one, liked it a lot, particularly the first half of the CD.

Secondly, Michael's catalogue prior to Invincible (Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous) was remastered and released in '01. They did an outstanding job in my opinion (slipcovers, photos, liner notes and bonus tracks and interviews, not to mention great sound quality). In fact, many who review the 2-channel SACD of Thriller claim that the 2001 remaster is better than the SACD which is why I never took the $15 plunge, as much as I love the album.

It's clear that with both the standard and deluxe editions of Thriller due on Feb. 12th, it will be a long time before anything else will make it to SACD. Personally, I'd be just as thrilled to hear Off The Wall or even Bad in 5.1 sound as I would Thriller. Dangerous wasn't my cup of tea, however.

In the meantime, check out the teaser video for the 25th Anniversary edition here: http://michaeljackson.com/

Cheers,

Dan

I don't understand how he can afford to hold on to those either. I guess he's got a liquidity issue -- not a solvability one.

EDIT: I believe solvency is the proper term.

Actually it's the other way around.

Sony acquired 50% of the rights to Michael Jackson's publishing catalog back when Jackson was experiencing some liquidity problems.

We'll have to wait and see if/when Sony picks up the other half....
