Anyone know if there will be further instalments in this series? The viola concerto, for example, coupled with, say, the Hindemith variations?

Hello Simon,

I would like to know your opinion on that particular release. I would like to know especially comparison of the Symphony #2 with the BIS release under Hughes, if possible.

regards

Hi, Sylvian. I haven't heard either recording. The unfavourable reviews here and elsewhere have put me off buying the Hughes, but I thought I might give the Gardner a go. The only recording of Walton's 2nd I have is the one made by Szell fifty years ago. Simon

If this is as dull as his Walton 1st, then no thank you!

I haven't heard this either but I think Gardner's first is really fine, and the reviews have been uniformly very good to excellent. What I think will be hard to match is the Poltera version of the cello concerto which is absolutely gorgeous Walton, Hindemith: Cello Concertos - Poltera, Shipway.

As for the BIS recording of Walton 1&2, Walton: The Symphonies - Owain Arwel Hughes, I think the performance of #2 is the better of the two and does the piece justice. It also seems to be the better recorded, though after a recent equipment change I find the whole disc to be better sounding than I remembered. I prefer Gardner's recording of #1.

Shipway is really disappointing in those concertos. The worst I've ever heard.
I recommend Tortelier/Berglund for Walton and Moser/Poppen for Hindemith.

In his discussion of alternative performances of Walton's Symphony #2, Mr. Williams doesn't mention a fine (I think) one by Andre Previn and the LSO. It was even available in a high-def presentation in EMI's short-lived offering of DVD-Audios. The catalog number is: EMI Classics 4 92402 9
