...so why oh why go to DGG and their inferior PCM approach to 'high-res' recording, a company that has never used DSD and arguably have nothing even remotely new or exciting to bring to this corner of the music globe?

Distribution network and promotion expertise.

To paraphrase former Boston Celtics coach Rick Pitino, Herbie von K. ain't walking through that door any more.

You can get a taste of this forthcoming DGG Shostakovich series online here:

http://www.bso.org/MediaCenter/

Just scroll down to the 4.4.2015 Concert Broadcast item (Beethoven and Shostakovich). It's a wonderful reading of the Tenth.

I wonder if BSO Classics will continue to release material outside the purview of DG's Shostakovich project. And are the BSO's SACDs a thing of the past?

Just found a recent Forbes article about the BSO/DGG deal. In it Mark Volpe, Managing Director of the BSO explicitly states the following:

"[...] We plan to continue to release recordings of other repertoire on our BSO Classics label. We released our first BSO Classics recording with Maestro Nelsons last November [Sibelius and Wagner], and are regularly recording our concerts with him at Symphony Hall with the intent of future releases on BSO Classics.”

The Sibelius/Wagner disc is available for download as 5.1 FLAC, so I wouldn't exclude future SACD releases.
