The morning after, I had to put the RBCD back on the shelf next to the SACD. The qualities of the two sets are such that they complement each other rather than compete. Obviously, I can only listen to one at a time. For a thrilling dynamic experience I can put in the former; for an impressive monumental experience, the latter.
That is similar to my impression. The SACDs definitely emphasize the lower voices, the RBCDs are lighter and somewhat brighter. You might even say the RBCDs sound more French and the SACDs more German. I prefer the new remaster to the old, but I can certainly see the appeal of the RBCDs. Collecting different performances of the same piece is one thing. Collecting different versions of the same recording is a cliff I'm afraid to even look over ;-)
