If you feel deserving of a treat, treat yourself to this recording. Exemplary performance coupled to an outstanding recording qualifies this disc as a 'must have'. A Bruckner symphony even you can love. Lightness shone into every dark corner. The best one yet on SACD? "You' better believe it"

I'll check it out. It is this month's Gramophone's Editor's choice.
I quite like van Zweden's recording of the 2nd and 3rd, his 9th much less.

I felt the same kind of revelation when I, last winter, bought the Blomstedt box set of symphonies 1-9 (label is Querstand) and truly heard the first and second ones as the great pieces of music they are. That box is btw a very recommendable investment. Get it while you still can, there's at least one very insightful (correct word?) review at this site.

(Edit: changed bad word to better)

Which version of the symphony is this?

The Blomstedt recording is said to be of the Linzer Fassung 1866, edition Nowak 1955.

van Zweden uses the Linz version, as do most conductors. A recent exception is the truly excellent recording by Abbado + Lucerne Festival Orchestra of the 1891 Vienna version of the 1st. (not on SACD, but very good nonetheless.) The 1st appeared to be an Abbado specialty (he recorded it three times, at least for official releases).

hi Fox,
I know that you do not like one line reviews, as you said once yourself, but let me tell you that I am one of those who liked yours. Why? Because I felt it came straight from the heart and recognizing you as a genuine music lover I have now bought it.Sometimes one liners can be revealing.
Cheers.

Thanks a lot for the advice hiredfox.
I gave in and downloaded it in its DSD native form. And I have to say that, although I thought Bruckner's symphonies really worth hearing started with number 3.
Well I was both right and wrong it turns out.
If you count his early study symphony and "Die Nullte",this 1 st symphony is actually his 3rd.
Anyway, what a wonderful symphony and what a superb recording!
"Ein keckes Beserl" indeed.

I am now very tempted to download the 8th from the same label/conductor this week.
How does it compare to Janowski's on Pentatone?
Any advice?

I own both the Janowski and Van Zweden recordings, but it has been a long while since I listened to them. If you're willing to wait a few days, I'll try to listen to them both this week give you my thoughts.
