Another interesting question that the Blu-Ray launch raises is whether Sony thinks that Super Audio CD (SA-CD) and Direct Stream Digital (DSD) have a future. At the show, Sony officials noted that the audio output on their new STR DG-1000 receiver is actually marked not "CD" but rather "SA-CD/CD" as one clue to their thinking along with their recent enhancement to the SACD mastering format. I also heard once again that the Super Audio CD playback feature as well as Blu-Ray Disc playback both continue to be part of the feature package for the upcoming Sony Playstation 3 product due out this November. And I was told that SACD playback was coming to a future edition of the Blu-Ray hardware platform. So this will be an interesting area to watch.

Well, it's a (re-) start, but both Silly, Stoned & Sony and Universal Disaster have got a long way to go before I can really believe them. For starters, how about finally issuing ALL the Steely Dan classic LPs in 5.1 SACD, like Eliott Scheiner has been nagging them to let him do, and for Sony's part, how about finally releasing the first five Byrds LPs in 5.1? Plus, Blood Sweat & Tears's "Child is Father to the Man" in surround, you know, the mix Al Kooper did for you THREE YEARS AGO?

Remember?

But of course you major label people don't. That's the problem.

According to Kal Rubinson of Stereophile, the STR DG-1000 has HDMI v1.2 inputs....able to accept SACD digitally.

Having also seen that there are a few Sony Vaio notebooks with DSD,I was at first interested in buying one.But it seems you can't actuallly play SACDs on them.
Would anyone here with more technical knowledge than me, be able to tell me what I could to with a Sony Laptop with DSD?What are you supposed to do with it if you can't play SACDs ?
Could I make my own live DSD recordings instead of using my DAT recorder?
Or Why have they included DSD in their laptops?

Chris,
I don't qualify as one with copious technical knowledge, but if you don't mind my guess, several possibilities come to mind. Recording/capture, as you mentioned. This implies editing possibilities. Perhaps even some future downloadable technology, iPod-style.

Then again, sometimes features get into a product as "tag-alongs." It seems to me that the Japanese are very fond of lots of features, regardless of whether the consumer would ever use them. I call that the "5 yen more syndrome." "Ah, for 5 yen more we could make it do THIS!." And so it does that merely because it can do that. There is a lot of that on the pro side, so we're kind of used to it.

If it's a placeholder for a future capability, that means they're thinking about the future, and it includes SACD - both very good things.

A DSD-capable computer for the home user is nonsense. The DSD recordings can be played back on that type of computer only. How many of us use the computer for *high end* audio? I'm not speaking of LP-to-CDR transfers, CD copying, iTunes, iPod, etc, but only of music listening.

With any PC with a suitable soundcard, you can record in hirez PCM (96kHz/24Bit) and burn your own DVD-A. As much as one prefers DSD over PCM when it comes to disc formats, PCM is the only DIY format of the two.

Audio Server for a AV receiver, or any other future device, with RJ45/Ethernet network connectivity?
