The Boulez/DG disc is, to be kind, "unexciting". Anyone heard this new disc? Comment please!

I'm interested in that too.

I may just order it spontanously, since it's only 6 Euro at Zweitausendeins. I've never heard the chamber orchestra adaptation by Schönberg.

I think it's one of his less successful arrangements. It's an interesting curiosity to hear once or twice, but that's it.

Yes, this is Das Lied on a smaller scale*, but it is VERY well performed and recorded. It possesses a clarity which none of the four other versions I have can claim. It's all Lyrik, no Schlag. Given the lack of endearing qualities in the DG/Boulez disc, this disc is the one to buy.

*which might disappoint the 1000-strings crowd (including Gustaf).

How is the singing? I own a couple of the other chamber versions on RBCD and am generally put off by the singing.

I don't feel qualified to do a review of voices, but I have lived with Das Lied for many years, and so I have opinions.

The voices are young and clear (unlike older name-brand superstars who hide under a heavy dose of vibrato). That seems appropriate to a work where Youth and Springtime figure heavily. I am listening right now to Anna Haase do the second song. It is hauntingly understated, like silk over silver -- or something like that. Great breath-control anyway.

Daniel Sans is also staying on the understated side of things, maybe reining himself in for this chamber version. My favourite Drunkard on redbook is René Kollo, and my least favourite is Placido Domingo, both vocal power-houses. Sans is in the room with you here, not prancing on stage and belting it out to the upper balconies. On the down-side, I could swear that my german diction is better than Sans', and HE is german (too much American influence in Frankfurt?).

So if you need lots of brass behind voices with a vibrato you can drive an ox-cart through, this is not your kind of disc. If you want to hear some beautifully controlled voices doing some of the world's saddest music right there in the room with you, order it.

Unless this is the ultimate disc...

Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde - Arming

-- But judging by robstl's recent review: no.

Another in a long line of Japanese releases -- someone certainly needs to purchase this one to find out. ;-)

I share your enthusiasm for Kollo. He is my favorite of all Mahler tenors (at least in terms of M8 and DLvdE). Heck, someone must agree with me since he recorded DLvdE with Karajan, Bernstein, and Solti. OTOH, there are so many great tenors that have done DLvdE, I would hesitate to call any single one my favorite. My main problem with Domingo is that he seems to be continually out of sync with the orchestra, as if they should be following his lead.

I think I will save my money for the for the new recording on BIS that Bissie tantalized us with last year and promised for 2007.
