I have the impression that the SACD is losing against DVD-audio.

They have lost both already some time ago. DVD-A is virtually dead. SACD is just keeping a niche status in classical music.

Who cares if there are 6 pop releases for DVD-A per year vs 4 for SACD? It's completely irrelevant. There have been 10-20 times more releases on vinyl.

For whatever this is worth, I recently received a SACD/DVD-A catalog from Elusive Disc. There was at least 25 pages of SACD titles and less than 6 pages of DVD-A titles...

Once again, whatever this is worth..

Chers,

For sometime now, I have had the opposite impression.

So have I.

I own about 40 SACDs and only two DVD-As. And as for my buy list, there are only 6 DVD-As on it (versus 113 SACDs).

The bad thing with DVD-A - as far as I can judge from my own (limited) experience - is that you can't use it as a regular CD (i.e. just put in the player and play): you've got to switch the TV on and navigate through the menu. Some people will say this is because you've got multimedia content but what I've seen so far is only still pictures, which is fine but not enough to bother switching the TV. And of course you can't read DVD-As in your car or on any regular CD player.

In other words, what I'm trying to say is that DVD-A is not as easy an audio product as it could be (compared to SACD), and it is not a good multimedia product either.

I may be wrong on all the line but this is really how I've come to experience DVD-A versus SACD.

I care in that there are some important pop releases on DVD-A and many excellent classical on SACD - more than enough to use up my spending money!

I am still unclear whether the messy rematch between Bluray and HD-DVD will yield any value for high-res audio and whether the PS3 as an SACD player will help at all.

Major releases in the US are now solely done in the DVD-audio format.

As far as the impression has validity, fortunately it mostly applies to the US.

In Europe, the Depeche Mode remasters are released with SACD, and Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms album was released as SACD instead of DualDisc.

I'm sure there are more examples.

Yes, vinyl seems to be ideally suited for a type of music that (for the vast majority of the output) will not find a second generation of listeners.

Not necesarily - if you place your DVD-A in your player's tray and hit directly the 'play' button (and not 'close' first) the disc will start playing immediately. I always listen to my DVD-A discs without switching on my TV.
However, if you want to switch from the multichannel track to stereo (or the other way around) then you have no choice but going via the menu.

I don't think that DVD-A and SACD should be considered as being rival formats. know it all started as a war but currently they are both fighting on the same side: it's hi res audio (DVD-A and SACD) versus low res audio (CD and MP3).
I don't care in which format an album is released as long as I can get the hi resolution version. Choosing to buy only one of the two formats will only limit the choices even further.

In my opinion, seen from the consumer side, the way the DM remasters are released is ideal (i.e. an SACD + a DVD). Everybody wins in this game (Mute also, because they sell more discs).

Last month, I asked Naxos an unrelated question and tagged a question as to why they're not releasing anymore DVDAs and SACDs. This is what I got on the subject:
"We regret that we have stopped releasing new SACD and DVD-A releases – DVD-A is already dead and SACD is dying – in 2005 sales of SACD’s dropped about 40% as compared to 2004 and continue to drop in 2006. The format is no longer supported by any of the majors and hardware is difficult to find. Even most independents have started cutting back on new SACD releases."
