I'm hoping this is all that we've been hoping for. I have to admit that I love Telarc's old 1986 recording with Mackerras and the LSO. There are other great ones out there, and I hope we can get some comparisons.

I've always liked Dorati's way with the work but I find the Mercury SACD reissue disappointing.

Well, it certainly satisfies all my needs! Very natural sound, committed and beautiful playing, thoughtful phrasing - simply excellent!

Couldn't agree more.Any chance of a Sleeping Beauty from the same team. There are some interesting fillups from Swan Lake orch. by one Vissarion Shebalin about which the notes say nothing. Does anyone have any details?

This is a very straight performance. No illuminations at all, rather bland in fact. This orchestra members could probably play this music in their sleep. There are many versions that are better and Temirkanov on RCA is my favorite. Much more drama and sweep.

Edvin says this is "straight" or "bland" - this is probably a fair assessment; I prefer to think of it as "straight" although I can appreciate that others will prefer an interpretation that has more direction from the conductor. It is very hard in such a magical score to separate the composition from the quality of the performance.

I actually like this disc a great deal. I think there is plenty of drama and beautiful playing. The vivid sound doesn't hurt either. Are people here listening in Stereo or MCH?

I too get much enjoyment from these discs more than the single disc Gergiev lead performance on Philips. Yes a 'straight' performance which is to its credit. What you get is just what you would get if you attended a performance at the Bolshoi Theatre. A good example of this and showing how good the recording 'delivers' is the end of the 'Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy' in Act Two. On this recording there is a pause before the 'Coda' just long enough for the dancers and for the "heavenly sweet" sound of the celesta to be allowed to die away naturally.

An interesting range of views. While I enjoyed the performance in general I found it curiously lacking in drama. Arguably it's some of Tchaikovsky's most delectable music but it's not all about surface glitter. To my ears the Telarc recording (Sir Charles Mackerras and the LSO in top form) has much more dramatic weight and thrust. Surely a candidate for an SACD release?

Did you listen in Stereo or MCH? I find the MCH very dramatic myself.
