I disagree here with the quality of the MC work on the cello concerto. Way too much sound is coming from the rears (definitely from the recording and not from the system), making it sound very unnatural. The cello is really on the left, where the second desk of first violins should be, and also very upfront with a background orchestra.

Very artificial, and such a pity, because the stereo mix is perfect, and all the contrary, which means very live-like!

5 stars stereo, 2 stars MC.

Julien,

Have you set your speaker levels using the set up disc from PentaTone: "Stay in Tune with PentaTone", and a sound level meter?

I suggest that if you do, you will find the rear channels on this to be perfect... very natural and no sound discernable from the rear when you are facing forward in the usual "sweet spot".

The difference I get with the rears turned off and the rears turned on is that with the rears turned on, the sound stage becomes enormous just like in a concert hall. There is also a greater sense of air and ease to the sound.

Maybe you are using speakers in the rear with a livelier treble than the ones in the front? That can be a problem with some discs. If all five channels aren't the same, the ones in back should be a little less bright than the ones in front!

Well, it was a professional system that was set with the
"Stay in tune with Pentatone" disc, and sounded perfect balancewise on all the Pentatone recordings I heard, and quite a few others also. But I know that systems sound different anyway, and the rears can still be ajusted. Actually the bigger problem here was about the cello being too separated from the orchestra, which really was not involving like other recordings. That didn't seem ajustable to me, that's why.

Of course I've experienced many times radical changes in my point of view about a recording just with different systems, so this all can only be personal, and the impression of one day.

Of course, I hope to get my own mch setting in one or two years time when I rent a new appartment.

this SACD seems to be out of print.
Does HarmoniaMundi only press SACDs for a limited time

Not only the SACDs.

According to the HM site, the 2005 CD (HMC901867) was reissued in 2009 (as HMX2901867), and the hybrid SACD is no longer listed.

One does not need to be sorry about HM deletion of this SACD, there is far superior sacd of Dvorak Cello Concerto by Wiespelwey / BFO / Fischer on Channel. And it's very much available.

AcousticSounds, HMV Hong Kong, Amazon Japan got stock!
It's a pity that highly-acclaimed SACDs like this one are in danger of extinction.

The disc sold well, and is essentially mostly sold out, except for vendors still with stock in store.
HMU generally has small production runs as they do double inventory. The company has the option to do another small production run, as they did with the Rachmaninoff Vespers.

Yes I love the Wispelwey! However I would not want to be without Queyras. It will be a real shame if another run of this is not produced. Aside from it providing a very nice alternative to Wispelwey, Wispelwey's disc doesn't carry the Dumkey trio along with it for one thing.

Can someone suggest a source with a sane price? I wouldn't pay $99 if he personally played it for me in my living room!
