A Grammy nomination also goes out the Minneapolis Symphony and Osmo Vanska for their recording of Sibelius 2 and 5!

Congratulations!

Ah, Constable! Or as we say on this side of the King's herring-pond, "Carnation Milk From Contented Cows". Thank heavens you're not producing fluffy kittens in a basket ;-)

While "masticate" may conjure up a more pastoral image, Robert is actually quite right about "regurgitate" as this highly scientific article from one of our esteemed institutions of higher education makes abundantly clear: http://www2.kenyon.edu/projects/farmschool/food/milkbio.htm .

And indeed congratulations are in order to all concerned for the several grammy nominations received by sacd labels. It's interesting to me that the Channel Mahler 1 and BIS Sibelius 2, both somewhat controversial interpretations, received nominations. It may be true, as Tom speculates on the Channel thread, that it's quasi miraculous that any classical recording gets more than a handful of votes at the nomination stage, but at least these choices suggest that a few folks are paying attention. Given the obvious political slant of the members (check out the spoken word nominations) I'll predict that the Pentatone Music for a Time of War is the likely winner.

Dear Bissie,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the new Aho album supposed to be released last month? Didn't see it in this months Bis newsletter either. Any news on that? Looking forward to it, thanks. :)

I really don't know from where you got it that BIS-1876 SACD should have been out now.
Facts are that we do have it in stock and have sent out the review copies to our agents. The official release is Jan 2013.

It is Aho's Oboe Concerto and other music for oboe. It is fantastic - every bit as good as the Flute Concerto, which was my favourite Aho work up to now. One of those records that make me proud to be in this profession.

Robert, the source must be your own posting...

Oh, I must have remembered the date incorrectly.
Flute Concerto is actually my favourite Aho work too at the moment, so now I'm even more excited about the Oboe concerto.

Thanks for the reply.

Some repertoire that fits nicely into the BIS ballywick: orchestral and chamber music by Heinrich Marschner. An early romantic era composer, he is mainly known for his operas and singspiels but he also wrote 7 piano trios (I am familier with a couple of those), 2 piano quartets, two unpublished symphonies and an unpublished piano concerto. I wonder if the manuscripts of the symphonies and piano concerto are extant? It would be wonderful to have recordings of this stuff.

Hello Bissie

Whilst browsing eclassical, I noticed that:

Beethoven: Piano Trios - Kempf Trio

is only offered as a 16 bit download? So I was wondering if this means that the original was a 16 bit recording? Or perhaps 24 bit 44.1KHz? Or something else? Can you perhaps clarify?

Many thanks

I will try.

I am at home now, so cannot be absolutely certain, but, unless I redfacedly write anything else tomorrow, here's the answer:

The original, I am pretty sure, is native DSD. Under no circumstances is it 16-bit!

We have had some problems with transferring about 5 DSD productions to PCM 24/96, mostly for a complete lack of time and apparel (we borrowed the DSD recorders from SONY at the time). This is presumably why eClassical only have them as 16 FLAC and mp3.

They will be correctly transferred, no doubt about that, but we are in the process of programming and installing surround downloading at eClassical, which is also very time-consuming, as well as introducing a major label for the first time in WW 24-bit selling, and these are priorities to be kept.

Sorry if this turned out to be a push for eClassical (nah, I am not that sorry) but I believe this is the correct answer. Thanks for asking.

Robert
