From the reviews, this looks like it could be THE set of Shostakovich symphonies to get. Will definitely be considering this in the new year! :)

This one is really good too, and cheaper...

Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 1-15 - Kitajenko
I have the Kitajenko - its definitely not the end-all be-all of Shostakovitch symphonies. A friend brought one of the Caetani discs over and I was really impressed with it. I am also very impressed with each of the releases so far in the ongoing series from PentaTone.

I find Kitaenko to be more consistent accross the symphonies. I really like Caetani in 1-9, but 10-15 I find lack energy and ferocity. Not sure if it's orchestra, conductor or both, but they're a little tame compared to what's out there. The sound is consistently good though. I find it brighter than the Kitajenko set. The brass I would have liked with a more rounded sound, but it's pretty good. All in all... they're both good, but neither is the ultimate Shostakovich set to get. If the desert island question were to be answered, I'd go with Kitajenko.

Dinko, I agree completely with your advice and assessment of the sound/performances! I'd also go with Kitajenko; I'm glad to have the Caetani set, too (the bells in the 11th are really memorable, and the soprano in the 14th is free of distortion, unlike Kitajenko's).

For the most reviews I've seen on web and papers, Caetani is not genius but very good (excellent on some symphonies : 12, 5, 6 ...) and better recorded than Kitajenko. The packaging seem better too and I have a good feeling with the label "Arts music"... so my choice is done ;-)
P.S : for the best cycle, I think it is Haitink and I have it. (in CD alas !)
