Discussion: Buxtehude: Complete Organ Works Vol. 4 - Bine Bryndorf

Deciding to explore the music of Buxtehude I decided to order a few SACD's and RBCD's to sample the music.
A few days ago, I received this particular SACD as well as a std RBCD from Arte Nova.(Arte Nova is a budget label)
Obviously I put on the SACD first and within a few seconds I noticed the extremely mediocre sound quality, the tonal quality is unpleasant and the church acoustic poorly recorded. Then I put on the cheapish Arte Nova cd and here just the opposite, a stunning recording!!
Both disc have some identical compositions on it and again the Arte Nova
performances are streets ahead, and exiting, in comparison the performances by
Bine Bryndorf are tame and unexiting.
I am not an organ expert, but have about 40 organ cd's/sacd's and this particular SACD would be at the bottom of my list, so I shall sell it next week
(at a big loss) but on the other hand I can but highly recomend the Arte Nova
"Buxtehude organ works" it will impress you for sure. I bought it from an Amazon seller for 2.5 $
Anyway the point that I am making is too purchase with care, SACD does not guarantee good music, or good sound, and reviews, especially when there is only one, should be taken with a pinch of salt.

I am a big pipe organ fan and had to build my own speakers just to experience the glory of this instrument.
Never mind DSD and never mind SACD, for the finest pipe organ recordings try the RBCD on Dorian label dating back from eighties, Jean Guillou/St. Eustache Cathedral pipe organ.

One of the big factor is the organ itself and St Eustache organ just sound so right, or should I say this is my type of organ. In general I do prefer the sound of Cavaille Coll organs.
I have many Jean Guillou recordings and all of them have that special (sound) quality, sure the St Eustache Ignaugural recording is the best.
I just received the "Guillou plays Guillou" all 7 cd's recorded at St Eustache and all of them have this glorious sound, sure some of the music maybe a little "Out" for most, Guillou can be exentric to say the least.
BTW, I do not think that the Telarc organ recordings are good, nor the Reference Recordings, they just do not sound "natural"

I have Telarc organ CD’s performed by Michael Murray, the ambience is much different from in cathedral recording since it was recorded in Symphony Hall Boston, add to that Telarc’s house sound which I find to be always clinically dry for anything from that label, I do like it.

Chandos has done a good job with their more recent organ recordings.

For me “natural” organ sound comes from the natural setting for this instrument which is a church or a cathedral, reverberation is very much part of the overall sound and some organ compositions such as Cesar Franck works factor in the reverberation, these works sound pretty empty when performed in much dryer acoustics of a concert hall.

As for Dorian St. Eustache recordings a lot of credit goes to the recording team in capturing the sound of that magnificent French organ, can you just imagine the resulting disaster if Telarc was chosen to do the recording in that cathedral?

Just some personal favorites:

On RCBD CAN-9271 Guilmant, Widor & Poulanc, Ian Tracy/BBC/Yan Pascal Tortelier, the Poulanc Concerto for organ strings and timpani is my favorite on this recording, very reverberant acoustics and a larger than life interpretation compared to the benchmark Munch/BSO. The Poulanc is customarily used as a filler for SS Organ Symphony, I like the Poulanc better than the SS Sym 3.

On SACD CHSA-5056 “Grandes Pieces Symphoniques” Ian Tracy performing French Organ Works at Liverpool Cathedral.

On SACD CHSA-5048 “Fantaisie Triophale” Ian Tracy/BBC Philharmonic/Gamba & Liverpool Cathedral.
