Anyone?

Purchased having had my attention drawn to it, thanks! Very stimulating; maybe not everyone's cup of tea.

In brief: HIP on modern instruments (Manze thinks Brahms would have expected vibrato so strings not thin on this count); phrasing marks scrupulously followed in strings that lead to radically different balances. If looking for the Brahms PO, order Rattle or Bychkov. Still listening (& enjoying) - well worth a punt before jpc increase price later this month.

One problem... The horn section in this orchestra is TERRIBLE... Clams and out of control vibrato. Vibrato is acceptable in horns, but the solo player in this orchestra is really uneven.

I also think Manze does NOT have real control of tempo over the long structures. He starts out fast and loses impulse as the orchestra settles into their regular Brahms drill...

Divergent opinions! An OK from Polly Nomial often proves to be a good thing though.

Manze's interpretive ideas really pay off in the Fourth and to a lesser extent in the Second.

Received this set last week. I listen in SACD stereo. Overall, the sonics are excellent. I agree with an earlier post that the horn solos are weak and wobbly. Other than that, though, the rest of the orchestra sounds fine.

I enjoyed the third and fourth symphonies the best. Manze seemed to use more conventional tempos here. The first seems too fast and gives the impression of shallowness. The second is more enjoyable because it can handle quicker speeds.

All in all, I enjoyed the Bychkov set more, but I will return to the Manze third and the overtures when I'm looking for something different.

I wish the Makerras set on Telarc would be released as SACDs. It wa soriginallly recorded in 20 bit. It is VERY good indeed as a cycle. And the sound is amazing.

Sorry, the booklet is not specific on that information.
