Karajan's overly smooth legato is detestable.

Amazon.co.uk has this listed at £63 for pre-order! Are they having a laugh!?

Had you always disliked that aspect of the recording or did you buy the disc and find it wasn't to your liking?

Maybe it's worth buying an old CD of these reissues first, to see if we like the performance before we splash out at these outrageous prices? I just have...£3.53 inc postage on Amazon.co.uk.

I have this recording on rbcd. I don't want to spend 50 some bucks to listen to it in hi-res.

Agreed. If you need the Dvorak, this is the winner: Dvorak: Cello Concerto, Dumky Trio - Jean-Guihen Queyras.

Not a lot cheaper, though, with the current OOP blackmail pricing. But the RBCD version should be another kind of proposition altogether.

The problem is that those SHM-SACDs are expensive already on the japanese market: 4500 Yen list price, compared to 3000 Yen for EMI SACDs.

The cheapest way to get these SHM-SACDs is CDJapan, where the price including airmail shipping of one disc amounts to £40, plus VAT (£8) if you're unlucky with the customs.

Overly smooth legato?
Karajan had one of the world's best orchestras, one capable of delivering a clean legato when needed as here.
Legato is legato is legato.

I don't think Dvorak(or Strauss or Beethoven) need unmarked oily legato sacrificing rhythmic definition and crisp articulation. This is one of the reasons I prefer Kubelik's Dvorak, Kempe's Strauss, or any others' Beethoven to his.

I'm beginning to think that the above phrase is the most popular secret password whispered to the doorman of the Wannabe Classical Elitist Nightclub. : ) What was the password last week? Ah: "Reiner is always cool and detached."

Please note that in mid-Sixties, Karajan hadn't quite begun to conduct everything "Adagio con Quaaludio."

If Karajan is "smooth," alas Fisher's is scrubbed so clean with a wire brush that Dvorak's paint has begun to peel off. Then Wispelway absolutely has to find something new to discover in every phrase....

Give me Casals/Szell or Rostropovich any day.

Haven't heard the HM.

Wasn't there a password involving Previn too?
