I would really appreciate a review of this disc and how it compares to Karajan's later digitial version in the gold series. Any thoughts or reviews on this one?

Can't comment on the new transfer but the Decca was always vastly superior to the DG remake performance wise as indeed the recording. The DG was one of their worst recordings and that's saying something.

I can only speak for the Lp version. Some wonderful insights and TLC--esp in Venus and Mercury--but **not** one of Decca's better recordings, IMHO. Some garish massed string and brass passages.

Was it? Many years ago I had the vinyl version of this DG DIGITAL recording and I seem to remember it was quite impressive. The bass strings were very present. Of course, I had a young uneducated pair of ears and my stereo was an old Quad 405+ 44 with Celestion 442 speakers, not an equipment famous for rendering fine detail.

Never heard the vinyl but remember distintly a friend's CD. Reviews were prety scathing and were reflected in the sound and performance I heard. I especially recall a truly terrible dubbed in organ glisando in Uranus. It was recorded in Notre Dame I think.
To me DG sound became increasingly bad from the early 70's when they used more and more multi miking. Occasionally a really good one would escape: Bernstein's Carmen and his 1 and 7 Shostakovich symphonies with Chicago.

Though they have been famous for thin sound suffering from digititis, some DG digital recordings are in fact quite good. I recall Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante performed by the Orpheus CO as a nearly perfect one, The Planets conducted by Gardiner is also very good, some chamber music recordings are excellent: Eg: Mozart's piano trios and Grieg's violin sonatas (Dumay, Pires, etc), Mozart's piano sonatas (Pires), etc. Have you heard any of them?

You liked the Bernstein Shostakovich 7?? Interesting.....I loved the orchestra's usual outstanding playing and Bernstein's excellent interpretation but I and several friends thought then (and still joke about it all these years later) that that recording was one of DG's WORST sounding recordings...ever...and that was from a crowded field of other abominations from the dweebs who felt that every musician must have a microphone....I remember keeping that new CD just long enough to play it on several systems ranging in price from the mundane to the insane....and even that insane system could not help...

My little gaggle of classical fiends/geeks will always wonder how many more fabulous recording with Bernstein/insert orchestra we would have had if Lenny had chosen Decca or Phillips from the get go instead of CBS and DG....

Cheers,

The Orpheus CO recording of the Prokofiev Classical Symphony, Bizet Symphony in C and Britten Simple Symphony is one of my desert island discs.

Never heard that one, thanks for the data. I am not surprised, everything the Orpheus CO touch (or play, in this case) is concerted to gold. Have you heard Prokofiev's Classical Symphony played by The Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Abbado? Stunning musicality. And it also sounds quite well.

No, I've not heard the Abbado and will pick up a copy (heck, why not for $4.00?) Thanks! Not to stray too far from the world of SACDs, but there's another Abbado disc on DG I always thought was a real winner with surprisingly good sound - the Ravel Piano Concertos with Martha Argerich.
