Hello Nagraboy,
I am sure you are absolutely future proofed!

Thanks Chris, I'm really pleased with the new dCS.

I'm very much in favour of better performance for less cost Chris, but have found my dCS Puccini excellent value within context as a disc player/DAC.

I'm sure that in due course I will use the dCS DAC inputs for file based audio from a computer, especially DSD downloads. The eradication of mechanical moving parts may well permit better sound quality for less outlay eventually - as you have already found, but for now I'm happy with a kind of 'best of both worlds' solution which plays the music collection I have today, but doesn't close me off from the future developments in formats and hardware.

It's an exciting time for DSD - whether that's on SACD or HDD.

What if a 1500 US Dollar DAC actually not only seriously can compete with a High End SACD player costing 10000-15000 dollars or more, but possibly even outperform it?
I am only saying what if?

It actually did at the Newport Beach T.H.E Show in the Sony SS AR2 Speaker demo ballroom. The program material was Blue Coast Records DSD download, and the same SACD of Valence Records / Emily Palen - Glass. At least 300+ people witnessed the A/B, and it was 100% unanimously agreed that the DSD download through the Mytek Stereo DAC was clearly more lifelike.

By that same token, I can absolutely confirm that the DSD data contained on the SACD is bit perfect when compared with the DSD download. This was a playback hardware comparison, not software.

The Oppo BDP-95 supports SACD-Rs. SACD iso images burnt to a DVD-R. That is gonna be my next big purchase. With the nice Sabre DAC and the ability to play pretty much anything over USB or Esata and SACD-Rs, sorta eliminates the need for an external DAC.

Whoa. Does it still do that? It used to play ISO Blu-rays, too, but that was definitely killed by a recent firmware update, with no rollback allowed. Dunno if that affected DSD, as well. Ditto for the 93.

I just bought a dCS Puccini SACD player with digital inputs, clock input/output, software upgradability and digtial volume control. I feel very future-proofed.

It plays my existing (and growing) CD/SACD collection magnificently and will accept DSD files via the seperate dCS U-clock when the software upgrade is released. The other digital input I can use to connect a universal player for DVD-A/BD playback upto 24/192.

So whatever the future holds, the Puccini is ready for it. Players without inputs are fine, as long as you accept them for what they are and are prepared to buy into new hardware when downloads/file streaming becomes important.

The poster who said that downloads sound better than discs should not be so hasty, there are a majority who either think the opposite or hear no difference. It's all about accessibility, file payback may be the ultimate future, but right now there are so many SACDs to buy and CDs are cheap as hell. My dCS Puccini allows me to seamlessly move into downloads when the fancy takes me whilst still getting maximum performance from my SACDs.

YMMV.

Congratulations on your purchase, Nagraboy. You certainly have a fine piece of equipment. Expect a full report.

MattMan657 the OPPO BDP-93 and BDP-95 players also support playing Reference Recordings 24/176.4k HRx discs directly. http://referencerecordings.blogspot.com/2012/04/award-winning-oppo-player-partners-with.html

From what I was told on AVS forum and from the source of my isos, yes I believe it still does.

ISO support had to be removed from the Oppo. Playing a "SACD-R" (SACD image file burnt to a DVD-R) does not require ISO support. The Oppo plays the discs like regular single layer SACDs.

But why bother? Unless one has a very early firmware version of a PS3 and is ripping SACD's, or has a friend illegally sharing their rips, the Oppo plays the original SACD just fine.

The exception I can think of is using the Korg AudioGate software to create a burnable ISO file from a downloaded DSD .dff/.dsf file to create a physical back-up copy. But what you've then got (for purposes of the Oppo) is a DVD-R that's the same as the stereo file on the SACD.

Let's hope that the hordes of folks downloading SACD-Rs by the armful from the internet will get interested in the format, and at least some of them will start buying SACDs.

I'd say the effect is rather the opposite. It might boost the interest in DACs (with DSD support or not), not SACD players.
