I ordered this last week and received it this past Friday. I have been listening to the recordings this weekend.

These recordings give me goose-bumps. I don't know how to praise or describe them in words.

I love, I absolutely love Brahms four symphonies and have collected so many complete sets over the years that I have now lost count of them all.

I have many, many gems, many great performances in my collection but when a new one comes along, I can never resist hearing yet another interpretation of these inexhaustibly moving and enlightening works.

I am deeply gratified that I ordered this one. I am at such a loss for words.

The best intrepretions of these Symphonies invite you into Brahm's inner world (while lesser interpretations leave you standing on the threshold). I think the best way to describe and praise the Macal recordings is simply to say that these invite me fully in...in a way that I have not heard perhaps since coming across Carlo Maria Guilini's Vienna Philharmonic set some years ago.

I am so, so glad that I ordered this set, which comes generously on four individual discs and includes the Acamdemic Festival and the Tragic Overtures for good measure. My only quible with this set would be that these I believe were originally issued on four separate discs in both stereo and multi-channel but this box set is stereo only. I would like to have heard the multi-channel mixes but faced with music making of such quality, I think that's just me being greedy.

The stereo sonics sound superb. I feel like I have been transported inside the Rudolfinium where these were recorded. Every note sounds so clear, so true, that for all intents and purposes, I am there, live, inside the Rudolfinium (auditorium).

I'll take this set just as it is. It's worth every penny that I paid for it (I would pay a lot more indeed for such a gem).

I too have these and agree that they are very fine! The Exton 4-disc set of Rachmaninov is also
marvellous.

I think that Exton recordings are almost invariably superb- I also love the Macal Mahler and Dvorak
performances. It is just such a shame that so many Exton discs only seem to be available from
Japan- at, of course, a relatively high price.

This seems increasingly true of new releases- does anyone know why this is?

Many Exton available on Amazon.com USA, including some Macal. Exton titles, like other foreign labels, often release later in the U.S. than elsewhere. MDT has a selection, but not this one - yet.

Euell,
This thread is about the listed disc, not "many Exton", and this set is only available in Japan. Of course it may get wider distribution later, only time will tell.
Allegro is the US importer for Exton, and they list 46 discs, with 3 by Macal, and with several discs listed as out of stock. They do show the Pittsburgh/Honeck discs.
Exton used to have an importer in the UK, but that ended some time ago. Some of the vendors there may still have stock for sale, but I am not aware that Exton has another UK distributor, although perhaps they do. Exton has never had very wide distribution outside of Japan.

The Brahms symphonies disk does not seem to be available yet in Europe or the US, but may well be soon. Crotchet and Presto both seem to have an inventory of Exton.
