My desert island Hammerklavier -- wonder how much of an improvement is possible with the sound?

The quality of the tapes used is the only determinant of the sound quality. If they are poor the transfer will be poor. Let's be realistic by today's standards they can't be 'good' so at best the exercise should be viewed as preserving historic recordings.

In the case of this issue, the performances were recorded in three different decades, Op. 90 in 1965 (in excellent, clear mono), Op. 101 in 1986, and Op. 106 in 1975. All three performances are in excellent sound, and show improvements over the previous Praga issue on redbook CD. The Hammerklavier will not disappoint; except, perhaps, that a few keys on the piano are out of tune. That's really the only negative which remastering cannot improve!
