This jewel case set contains two versions of the same performance: Disc 1 is Pure Blu-ray Audio disc and Disc 2 is normal 5.1 SACD. It is interesting that this is LSO Live label's first Blu-ray Audio release, and the results are truly breathtaking.
Why they have to release only two concerts from Gergiev's highly acclaimed Berlioz cycle on LSO Live? Sir Colin Davis recorded his own Berlioz cycle between 2000-2012,and it wasn't very dull. Anyway, Gergiev is surprising good Berlioz-conductor. He leads his team to the exciting adventure, and he follows Berlioz's markings closely. The live concert's energy and feeling comes very close: sometimes I heard when Gergiev's groans.
Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14 was Berlioz's first public success. He composed it when he met Harrieth Simphson. The score is full of passion, emotion and drama, and Gergiev really understands that. The Blu-ray Audio adds more perspective to the Barbican Hall's dry acoustics, and music surrounds the listener. Bass drum's deep sound is stunning - watch out your subwoofer! - and the off-stage oboist distant melodies [in the third movement] sounds very far away.
This is much better than Sir Colin Davis' classic interpretation (LSO Live) or Leonard Slatkin's budget price performance (Naxos). I hope that LSO Live continues its Blu-ray Audio releases. I'm looking forward this same team's next release, Harold in Italy.
