Performance:   Sonics:
The Schubert is my favorite performance in a very present and pleasant sound. Pressler plays with a great vitality and tenderness, with sensitive rubati. The strings are not quite at the same level, but still very amiable. My only reservation about the recording is that the double bass is not quite present enough. The SACD reincarnation is an improvement over the previous Philips CD, but not a vast one.

For me, the Mozart performance is nothing to write home about, and neither is the recording. I greatly prefer the Gervase de Peyer / Melos Ensemble on EMI in "modern" instruments and the Wolfgang Meyer / Mosaiques on Astree in "period" instruments (both, regretfully, CD only, not SACD).

My rating is, therefore, for the Schubert only.

Performance:   Sonics:
The two works contained in this disc are the cornerstone of the chamber music catalogue. As such they make essential listening. And with these superb performances, there is no need to look further.

I found that the sound of the Schubert piece is truly outstanding: clear, well defined, with a lot of atmosphere. The Mozart piece was less satisfying, with the clarinet tone ( a difficult instrument to record) a mite restricted.
All in all, an excellent disc.

Performance:   Sonics:
The music itself is beyond comment. The performance is excellent, and captured perfectly. The performance may not be the most energetic, but it grows on one after a few listenings, and soon represents what one considers to be the "proper" interpretation of these two masterpieces. Instrumental timbre is accurately conveyed, as is spatial information. Piano sound is quite true. If there is any weakness, the recording is ever so slightly lacking in bass impact, but the tone is very realistic. Very nearly the perfect performance and recording of two nearly perfect pieces of music.
