Performance:   Sonics:
I have to disagree - this is probably my favorite SACD both for its sonics and the performance. I have to admit I've only heard this piece on the radio before purchasing this disc, so I can't compare it to other performances. I understand from the liner notes that this is the original orchestration of the Requiem which doesn't use violins (!), so perhaps that would color the opinion of anyone who is more familiar with the standard version which was orchestrated later in Faure's life. I have to say, though, that hearing this disc in multichannel leaves a lump in my throat and a pit deep in my stomach. (I'm a high school teacher and I occasionally play an itunes version of the CD layer on the computer in the classroom during exams, and the kids love it). Give it a shot - it's a wonderful disc.

Performance:   Sonics:
This is another of those recordings I listen to and can't help but thinking, this is the way this piece should be played!

Maybe no one has the right to say that, but when a artist can give me that feeling I usually give five stars. Listening to most of the recordings of musics I know, there always are many moments where I say to myself, "he (or she) could have done this better". Little details that, added together, reveal the quality of the performance. And I wouldn't give five stars to all of Philippe Herreweghe recordings, sometimes not even four. But this one is so fine that it gives me one of those rare moments when I can sit back and enjoy the music without paying attention to details. Ask professionals, you don't get this kind of luxury everyday, alas!

The sound is the best Harmonia Mundi has to offer, rather close-miked, incredibly rich and full of air at the same time. One of my favorites. And isn't the orchestra without violins a pure delight sometimes? As a result the children choir and women voices sound amazingly beautiful.

I don't mention the other work on this SACD, which isn't worth the buy in my humble opinion, but the beauty of the Fauré's Requiem is always breathtaking. Especially here. Divine.

Get it!

Performance:   Sonics:
I always liked the Requiem of Fauré, as it can make you cry and smile, while other requiems can only make me serious and solemn. My prefered recording is from Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy and Chorus of St Martin the Fields on Philips CD from 1995.
The reviewed disc unfortunately does not make me cry and smile, everything is so serious. For instance the Pie Jesu is sung without the emotion of Sylvia McNair on the Philips Disc. So if you are looking for a serious Requiem this disc may be your choice, if you are looking for something more light and emotional at the same time, then you better search somewhere else.
