I should have searched for more information and reviews of this SACD before I bought it. The performance is not bad. Actually, it is quite good. The problem here is the sound. There is a harshness to the violin sound. At times there even seems to be a slight distortion... which is a shame because it could have been a great release.

According to the booklet, it was recorded in DSD in February 2002. So, it should have great sound, but unfortunately that is not the case. I just read a 2009 discussion on this site that says the Neumann microphones that were used on the recording might be the problem because they were an older model. Who knows!? Also...The recording venue doesn't help much, either. The Palazzo Affaitati in Cremona gives the sound a lot of resonance, which might have been an asset...HAD the sound been more clearly recorded. But in this case, it adds to the harshness. Anyway... It is not a complete disaster. There are several passages that sound pretty good and one can imagine what might have been... IF the recording engineeers had taken a little more care.

Salvatore Accardo plays these difficult pieces with great skill and feeling. He has chosen to include the "ritornelli", which are not normally performed. This puts the playing time at well over 90 minutes and seems to be the reason this recording is described as the "First Complete Recording". It's a pity we can't hear his wonderful playing in wonderful sound!!!

But... I am afraid that due to the problems with the sound this recording cannot be recommended.
