Just a quick placeholder for now. I received this today from Elusive Disc, the only US online store I could find that sold it.

I love this symphony, and it's the first one I had studied from Bruckner, and that was with the Karajan BPO playing the 3rd Fassung. This recording, uses the 1st Edition, which I have only heard conducted by Inbal, on Teldec.

Nagano takes a decidedly romantic approach to this symphony. Everything is milked for whatever lyricism can be gotten from this music. This has a somewhat Schubertian quality, which is probably correct, given that Beethoven, Schubert, and Wagner were the major influences in Bruckner's musical output.

The sound is very good. This is quite the treat, because the 3rd Edition is so popular, this will probably stand out for a while as the only SACD of the original version.

Quite a wonderful disc. Great sound, nice playing, and good conducting.
If you like your music with a Wagnerian touch, this is your symphony. It's long, complex, overly romantic, etc. The third movement does provide some splendid light relief.
As Peter noted, this is the first edition of the symphony, rather than the more recorded third edition. As such, likely to be only sacd of this. It's also 10 minutes shorter than my Georg Tinter recording of the third edition. And 68 minutes of music is enough for a symphony.
