Performance:   Sonics:
These are two monuments of the classical reportoire, conducted by another 'monument' in the form of Bruno Walter. The performances here are very good in my view. The sound quality of this particular Walter disc is of a lesser quality than Walter's Brahms or Mozart SACD's - both worth seeking out as well. In this recording I hear a stridency in the massed string movements that I do not hear on the other two. That said, don't let that deter you from acquiring it because otherwise the sound quality is pretty good.

'The experts' differ on the reading of this particular Beethoven's 5th. Some say it it has been robbed of its pace and timing. Others think it not dramatic enough. So if you have many Beethoven 5th renditions, approach this with some care and do your homework. There is universal praise for the Schubert.
