Performance:   Sonics:
5 French Delights is an even better title. All beautifully written played and recorded.Varied, entertaining and Very French.
Starting with DIndys Oboe led Fantasy on a French folktune.A colourful pleasent orchestration for middle sized orchestra.14,10 seconds of delight and like the restof the disc it was difficult to say it wasnt a DSD recording.Close to demonstration quality overall.
Following this, Jackie Bears flute concerto probably the meatiest work of the disc.My favourite french composer but Ive struggled with this disjointed work in the past. The first movement could be a Pied Piper Ballet as the jaunty tunes meander all over the place and it ends with a falling off the end orchestral wallop.
This is followed by a beautifull romantic style andante where I would swear the flute is changed almost to a clarinet. The last movement returns to a different sounding flute with the similair punchy style hinted in first movement ending.Almost 20 minutes of occasional virtuostic playing again vivid but not ott, Open recording is excellent, similair to BIS items.
Followed by a contrasting Romance for violin and orchestra by Saint Saens .7 minutes of near heaven, thought I had reservations about the passionate bit.
This if followed in stark contrast by a fairly light concerto for flute oboe clarinet and fagott,(thats a bassoon.)Couldnt be anything other than french by Jean Francaix in his usual lightweigt jaunty meldodic style. These 12 minutes are pleasurable.Beautifull string sound.
We end with a total contrast modern trumpet concerto with piano and strings.A bright at times virtuostic work which has an intereting central relaxed slow section reminds me of the New York jazz era.At 9 and half minues this rounds off a well balanced and highly entertaining disc.
As usual interesting and helpfull notes in several languages.
I only wish this was the start of similair issues from these various German based Orchestras.
Im sure I could list similair items from DIndy, Ibert, Francaix etc for a follow up.
