Fauré and Duruflé's requiem are so often compared and combined ( as with this SACD release) on audio recordings i guess because of their apparent symmetry. I bought this SACD for a few of which is not that i really need another version of Fauré's Requiem. The attraction here for me was the authentic reproduction from within a cathedral with only organ and choral work. I have many versions with orchestration (Kathleen Battle with the Philharmonia Orchestra standing out) but to hear this skinnied down in vocal and organ form is a different representation.
On this SACD version Mattias Wager plays the organ (i discovered him on his "organ treasures" opus 3 SACD) and his complimented with the heavingly Swedish Radio Choir and the soprano of Miah Persson whose voice on Fauré's Pie Jesu will touch your soul.
As far as comparing this version to the others in my collection I still hold Philip Ledger's version with the Cambridge King's College Choir as the finest version but this one is still pretty beautiful

Now for the sound .....well this SACD is fantastic...offering a huge and bright soundscape to totally get emersed into. If you have deep love in your blood this SACD will make the hair stand up on your arms and your blood race.....ok maybe that was a bit much but I love the sound and am sure you will too. Great care went into recording these requiems and this disc seems to compliment and present this music that will please Fauré fans!

In Paradisum my Paradisum!!!!!!!
