Performance:   Sonics:
This is one of the most spectacular stereo SACDs I have heard. I obtained it via Ebay and was absolutely stunned by the sonics. The lush, brilliant sound of the strings, the opulent bass and the amazing sense of space combine to make this one of the most successful recordings to be issued on SACD. Even as a CD this compilation was widely regarded as a reference recording, not least because Stokowski handles the orchestral palette like no one else. The Romanian Rhapsody is a real gem, but the highlight is probably the prelude to Act III of Wagner's Tristan, a demonstration piece for the low strings. Stokowski's account of Smetana's Moldau does not quite match Szell's in verve and precision, but is warmer and more expansive. It would be difficult to tell this two-channel recording from a three-channel one. Hopefully, this compilation (recorded in 1960 and 1961) will make its way into the regular Living Stereo series and become available worldwide.
