I have been struggling with this review since Ive played this excellent disc. How does a mere mortal pass comment on one of the worlds musical masterpieces.Schuberts 8th as I will always call it has some of the most glorious melodies ever written and luckily on this excellent recording is played by an excellent and slightly enhanced chamber orchestra. This is I believe the best way as it seems close to what was intended.Schubert was no Beethoven and grossing up the Orchestral parts can normally lead to disaster. Also we are treated to some fine string playing and I will leave it at that.Extraneaus noises are the only minor quibble..The performance is also nicely paced ,probably very slightly slower in the 2nd movement and this brings out every detail.Though I feel some of the playing could be more pointed.I am not saying this is the best played or conducted version ever but it certainly will not have the traditionalists complaining. The symphony 4 which follows is a brisker pace and playing seems more articulated.Again there will be no cause for complaints. The Final Music to Rosamunde which also goes in the most beautifull music ever written category is an added bonus...and it fills the all Scubert disc out to 60 plus minutes giving you the opportunity to consider whether this music WAS part of the Unfinished.Definitely one to keep and go back to.Normal square case and average notes..Im probably being generous with 4 stars for performance but its so enjoyable..Dave
