Performance:   Sonics:
Dead by 36, Henry Purcell, born into a family of musicians, was a composer of genius. A child prodigy, he was composing by the time he was eight, before joining the chorus at the royal chapel. The royal organs were his for a while, until he replaced John Blow at Westminster Abbey. Purcell’s music was praised in his lifetime, then forgotten, then revived in the 19th century. “Most of his instrumental music”, states Elizabeth Kenny in her remarkable introductory text, “only existed in manuscript, known only by musicians who played it to earn a living. Only one opera was published in his lifetime: Dioclesian, a self-presented play for which he paid the bill. Week after week, he fought to have it programmed along side compositions by fellow composers who were almost as popular as he and whose works were performed just as often.” Uniting sacred and profane songs mainly inspired by Orpheus Britannicus and Ayres for the Theatre, this recording is a real gem of balance, wherein the voice of the young soprano Carolyn Sampson – light, depthful, voluble – just right in a word – is wonderful. Backed by appropriate instrumental accompaniment, her singing blooms into a perfect illustration of Purcell’s genius. A great moment.
