V. Joyce vcl, D. Hazeltine p, T. Reedus ds, P. Gill b, Chesky 2007. Valerie Joyce sings the music of Burt Bacherach. Some of the tracks are well known jazz standards, others are rather known in the pop scene e.g. Walk On By, That`s What Friends Are For, I Say a Little Prayer For You or Arthur`s Theme, all interesting material and beautiful songs. The band is playing very well but the voice and way of singing is very uncommon. It sounds as if she is trying to sing higher as she can all the time (hard to describe), always at the uppermost end of her abilities, always the same high pitch, as if she wanted to sing with a voice other than her own. Sorry, Miss Joyce, that`s not my kind. And that`s a pity, because as it is a Chesky disc, from the technical point of view the recording is and sounds perfect.
