Performance:   Sonics:
Another winner from the Exton-Macal-CPO team.

The orchestra is in top form, giving a ripe sound that suits this most complex of Mahler symphonies. The grotesque of the Scherzo movement is not at all overdone, but given the slight rubato applied to it (MAcal in brilliant form) achieves all the more effective sound scape for this mysterious music. Similarlly, the 2 Nachtmusik movements, which, for me at least, count in the most intensly lyrical and pathos-ridden music ever compose by Mahler, achivee the right balance between narrative and basic dramatic tone.

Overall, Macal does never loose the main-frame that he wants to achieve, but with an expert and unforced hand guides the CPO through this most complex score, achieving a fully coherent reading at the end. An outstanding interpretation.

The sound obtained by the Exton team is wonderful, as usual, in this Prague venue. A must for Mahler devotees.
