Performance:   Sonics:
This is first disc of Valery Gergiev's Mahler cycle. Performance is luminous. In the first movement orchestra's tone is natural: off-stage trumpets are placed very well. Movement's main theme is very beuatiful, and flute's trills are touching. Second movement is little slow. Trio is affect: violins theme is sensitive and bright. I like symphony's third movement. It is magical and mysterious, quiet and humorous.
The finale is stunning. Movement's stormy first part is simply amazing: I know that London Symphony Orchestra is one of the best orchestras in the world, but finale's virtuosity is dizzy. The lyrical second theme is lovely, music's emotionalism is heady. Symphony's finale is like a love story: fight, love and victory.
Barbican hall's acoustics is dry and orchestra's balance is good, but little remote. Still, I can recommend this SACD because there is real music making. Unfortunately there is not audience's applause. Still, this is great experience, great adventure. Don't hesitate, you will like this!
