Performance:   Sonics:
This is my second sacd purchase of this famous piece of music. My previous purchase was the Telarc Carmina Burana which I enjoyed.

I had heard a lot of negative critiques of this Chandos sacd and this particular performance and recording. That there was nothing new to this performance...that the late Mr. Hickox did not dig deep enough into the piece to ellicit any new meaning......and that the sound of the recording was bright and unevenly recorded. In short there was basically one review that was positive and about 5 that were not. Sooo........I took a chance anyway and was most pleased that I did.
I agree that I have not heard every single performance on disc of Carmina Burana. But I have heard enough to know that this is one of the better versions out there. And that it is a beautifully recorded sacd in pure dsd makes it all the better.

I found none of negativity attributed to this recording and performance to be true. In fact I think this is a fantastic recording and performance. Yes....it can be busy at times and bombastic but I think the engineers did an excellent job of capturing the nuances and the individual instruments across a very wide sound stage. I did not detect any brightness to the sound at all. This is simply a very good recording with great realism.

The vocals are very realistic and at times touching and the sound stage is so wide and the number of performers so vast that only a top notch sound system will bring out all that is recorded.
I find this to be a much more exciting version than the telarc sacd while the Telarc possessed a more delicate, sensitive and simplistic take on Orff's piece. The word reserved comes to mind when describing the telarc recording.

Mr. Hickox version is more forward...............maybe agressive. But in a subtle...good way. From the opening notes I was taken in and held there. I noticed that with both versions I own that the volume needs to be raised more than usual and this is a good thing as it means that no compression was used and that soft passages remain soft while loud passages really move the listener.
Another thing....I did not know that this was a live recording. I am sure that the audience was told to be very quiet and not a single noise was heard....until the very end of the concert when the audience erupted in great appplause. I was surprised at this.

Highly recommended.

I am not overly impressed with this recording. If it did not come with a scad logo it would be just any old compact disc to my ears. It comes across as a little distant. I feel like I am a long way from the performance.

I tend to feel a little disappointed when listening to it.

So that I do not spend too much time on this. A standard compact disc played through 5 channel stereo denotes a better atmosphere.

I feel like I bought a bum ticket to the show, you know the one where they did not tell you, you were sharing the seat with a rather large column that is supporting the roof.

Its nothing special. But you can get it for nearly £10.00 so at least you are not breaking the bank over this one.

Sorry if I disappoint.
